Hemingway, Ernest (1899-1961): a prominent American novelist and short-story writer. He began to write fiction about 1923, his first books being the reflection of his war experience. He came into the room to shut the windows while we were still in bed and I saw he looked ill. He was shivering, his face was white, and he walked slowly as though it ached to move. "What"s the matter, Schatz?"

"I"ve got a headache."

"You"d better go back to bed."

But when I came downstairs he was dressed, sitting by the fire, looking a very sick and miserable boy of nine years. When I put my hand on his forehead I knew he had a fever.

When the doctor came he took the boy"s temperature.

"What is it?" I asked him.

"One hundred and two."

Downstairs, the doctor left three different medicines in different colored capsules with instructions for giving them. One was to bring down the fever, another a purgative, the third to overcome an acid condition. The germs of influenza can only exist in an acid condition, he explained. He seemed to know all about influenza and said there was nothing to worry about if the fever did not go above one hundred and four degrees. This was a light epidemic of flu and there was no danger if you avoided pneumonia.

Back in the room I wrote the boy"s temperature down and made a note of the time to give the various capsules.

"Do you want me to read to you?"

"All right, if you want to," said the boy. His face was very white and there were dark areas under his eyes. He lay still in the bed and seemed very detached from what was going on.

I read aloud from Howard Pyle"s Book of Pirates, but I could see he was not following what I was reading.

"How do you feel, Schatz?" I asked him.

I sat at the foot of the bed and read to myself while I waited for it to be time to give another capsule. It would have been natural for him to go to sleep, but when I looked up he was looking at the foot of the bed, looking very strangely.

"Why don"t you try to go to sleep? I"ll wake you up for the medicine."

A Day´s Wait by Ernest Hemingway Summary In the story "A Day´s Wait" a nine-year-old boy living in America falls ill with influenza and has to stay in bed. The father calls for the doctor who takes the boy ´s temperature, which turns out to be one hundred and two degrees. He is given medicine and is told that there is nothing to worry about unless the fever goes over one hundred and four degrees. The boy stays in bed, but does not pay any attention to his surrounding; he does not listen to the story his father reads to him. He only stares at the foot of the bed, looking very strangely. His father goes out to hunt for a while and tells the boy to sleep, but when he returns from hunting he is informed that the boy would not let anyone enter the room because he is afraid that they will get what he himself got. The father goes to his son and finds him in the same position as he left him. Again he takes his temperature and it is still one hundred and two, nothing to worry about. So he tells his son to take it easy. The son agrees but suddenly asks the question how long it will take until he will die. The father is shocked and explains to the son that people never die from a fever of one hundred and two. After a while the son tells the father that he heard from a boy in France that people will die when they get a fever over 44 and he himself has one hundred and two. The father explains to him that there is a difference between the thermometers in America and Europe, which is the same with kilometers and miles. The boy relaxes and the next day he begins to complain about little things that are of no importance. The fateful misunderstanding Obviously there is an invisible wall between father and his son. They talk about two different things, the father about the disease and the son about his death but they do not know that they misunderstand each other. This fateful misunderstanding appears in different scenes where the father and son talk about "it", meaning two different things. One example is when the father asks his son why he does not go to sleep. "You don´t have to stay in here with me, Papa, if it bothers you." The son is talking about his death but does not mention his fear. He must be shocked when the father answers "It doesn´t bother me". Because the father does not know of the fear of his son there is no reason for him to explain that he won´t die. Instead he goes out to hunt. The boy must think that his father does not even care that he will die, but prefers going out to hunt. This fateful misunderstanding happens another time, again Hemingway uses the word "it" to describe two different things. Father: "It´s nothing to worry about." He means the fever. "Just take it easy." Since the son always thinks of death he assumes his father tells him to take dying easy so he answers: "I am taking it easy". The hunting scene In the story "A Day´s Wait" there is a story in a story. In this part of the story the father goes out to hunt for a while his son is in bed thinking about death. In the passage there is a description of nature, which is covered with a "glassy surface": you can see it, but you cannot touch it. This is the same as in the story, the father sees that his son feels bad, but he does not know why. In the hunting scene the circle of life appears. The father shoots the quails as long as he is able to catch them. They have to die, but some are able to escape. Between the father and nature there is an invisible wall (glassy surface) and between the father and his son there is an invisible wall, too. The point of view One interesting point in the story "A Day´s Wait" is the point of view which is very limited. Hemingway use the first-person narrator in this story because this way the father cannot read the boy´s mind and the reader is forced to see everything through the father´s eyes. The theme At the end of the story when the boy knows that he will not die he becomes his old self again: he starts to complain about little things that are of no importance just like before he thought he would die. This shows how death lets things appear in a different way, everything that seemed to be important before is not important anymore. Looking at Hemingway´s biography we can find parallels between the story "A Day´s Wait" and the author´s real life. When Hemingway took part in Word War I he was wounded twice. When he was in hospital he heard the doctor talk about his health and since he did not know any better he thought he would have to die. His own fear, the behavior and the feelings in this situation Hemingway expresses through the character of the son. The boy only knows that you will die with a fever of 44 degrees but does not know that he lives in a country with different thermometers. This also is the theme of the story: the innocence of a child. The boy would never talk about his feelings and fear, probably because he does not want other people to worry about him. He might not want to hurt them. The question arises why the boy does not want to sleep. The father does not worry about it, because he knows there is nothing to worry about, but the son maybe does not want to miss how it feels to die since he really believes he has to die. He does not know if it hurts and since death means endless sleeping he might be afraid that he will never wake up again. I personally like the story because it shows how a bad or difficult situation can chance to influence a person´s life. It becomes clear that especially children need the help of adults to understand what death and illness means. We learn that we have to help children to grow up and that we have to help them to understand the world around them, because as we can see in this story without the help they worry too much about things that they do not have to worry about.

In order to understand the message, sent to us, the readers, in the short stories of Ernest Hemingway one needs at least to a certain point know and understand his life path, in other words - his biography. Ernest was born in Illinois, in a family of middle class parents, and his childhood, despite the strictness of his parents, can be called happy (Benson, 365). In his teen years, Ernest discovered his talent and passion to literature, and started his literary career by writing short stories for the school magazine. Hemingway graduated in 1917 and took a position of a reporter at "Kansas City Star" (Meyers). He was covering various events, having to deal with hospitals and police.

During the First World War, Ernest was working as the Red Cross driver in Italy, and this experience heavily influenced his further literary focus. During that period of time he got wounded in both legs and returned to the United States. He had to return to his journalistic activities, since he needed to earn money for living. At that time he was working for "Toronto Star". Soon he gets married and returns to Europe to start his literary work.

In the end of his life, Hemingway experienced severe mental disorders, had severe depression and despite the treatment he received, he committed a suicide.

Plot of the story

The story chosen for analysis is "a Day"s Wait" by Ernest Hemingway. The story was published in 1933 in the book "The Snows of Kilimanjaro". The story tells the reader about a boy of about nine years old and his father, who lived, or rather to say, survived through a very difficult day. Both the child and his father are waiting; however, they are waiting for quite different things.

The boy catches flu, and the doctor is being sent for. The doctor comes and prescribes three different medicines, checks the boy"s temperature and says that it is 102 degrees Fahrenheit. The boy occasionally hears those words and subconsciously prepares himself to die. He is aware of only one temperature measuring system, that being Celsius. And 102 degrees Celsius is an unbelievable high temperature. He heard once, that people do not live with the temperature of 42, now he has got 60 degrees more. This means, reflects the boy, that he is still alive due to some unknown mistake of nature, and he expects his death to come any moment. The situation is getting more and more complex. The more the boy waits for his death to come, the more severe his state becomes. He has no appetite, he does not listen to the stories told and read by his father, he is only looking at the foot of his bed, expecting his death to appear. However, the boy does not want to upset his father with the worries, which his heart is full of. He wants to cause as little trouble as possible, therefore he tries his best not to let his father know, what his concerns are all about. However, the horror would not let him concentrate on anything and in the final score the boy makes up his mind to ask his father: "How long will it be before I die?" The father did not understand the question at first, and then, after the boy explains his concern to the father, the latter takes a sigh of relief. He explains the misunderstanding to the boy. Since everything was over, the state of the boy changed drastically: "But his gaze at the foot of the bed relaxed slowly. The hold over him relaxed too, finally, and the next day it was very slack and he cried very easily at little things that were of no importance." (Hemingway).

The author pays special attention to describing the state of tension, in which both the boy and his father find themselves. The boy"s awful state is described by the words "He had been waiting to die all day, ever since nine o"clock in the morning”.

The story and the reality

Thinking about possible parallels between the story and the reality we may run into a somewhat similar situation in the author"s life. When the author was wounded twice he woke up in the hospital and heard the doctor speak of his health. He did not quite understand what it was all about, but decided, that it really meant, that the end, his death. He puts his own feelings into the character of the boy - the boy does know very well, that people do not live with the temperature much higher, then 40 degrees, but the idea does not cross his mind, that there might be various ways of measuring body temperature.
The boy shows an outstanding example of heroism: he knows, or, rather to say, strongly believes, that he is going to pass away very shortly. He is afraid of his death and he is afraid of missing the moment it comes. He is afraid of something; he is not aware of what exactly it is, something new and eternal. And there is his father, who is there to share his concerns, ready to help and willing to help. Meanwhile, the boy understands how serous his concern is and does not want to share it even with his father. He realizes, that it would be the last thing he would ask for from his father, yet, he does not want to upset him, and therefore keeps the whole concern within his soul. He is not pitiful of his own self; he just does not want to upset others around him with his horrible discovery. They have enough of their own concerns.

One was to bring down the fever, another a purgative, the third to overcome an acid condition. The germs of influenza can only exist in an acid condition, he explained. He seemed to know all about influenza and said there was nothing to worry about if the fever did not go above one hundred and four degrees. This was a light epidemic of flu and there was no danger if you avoided pneumonia. Back in the room I wrote the boy"s temperature down and made a note of the time to give the various capsules. "Do you want me to read to you?" "All right, if you want to," said the boy. His face was very white and there were dark areas under his eyes. He lay still in the bed and seemed very detached from what was going on. I read aloud from Howard Pyle"s14 Book of Pirates, but I could see he was not following what I was reading. "How do you feel, Schatz?" I asked him. "Just the same, so far," he said. I sat at the foot of the bed and read to myself while I waited for it to be time to give another capsule. It would have been natural for him to go to sleep, but when I looked up he was looking at the foot of the bed, looking very strangely. "Why don"t you try to go to sleep? I"ll wake you up for the medicine." "I"d rather stay awake." After a while he said to me, "You don"t have to stay in here with me, Papa, if it bothers you." "It doesn"t bother me." "No, I mean you don"t have to stay if it"s going to bother you." I thought perhaps he was a little light-headed and after giving him the prescribed capsules at eleven o"clock I went out for a while. It was a bright, cold day, the ground covered with a sleet that had frozen so that it seemed as if all the bare trees, the bushes, the cut brush and all the grass and the bare ground had been varnished with ice. I took the young Irish setter for a little walk up the road and along a frozen creek. At the house they said the boy had refused to let any one come into the room. "You can"t come in," he said. In A Day’s Wait by Ernest Hemingway we have the theme of fear, courage, responsibility, isolation, confusion, acceptance and control. Taken from his The Complete Short Stories collection the story is narrated in the first person by an unnamed man (father) and after reading the story the reader realises that Hemingway may be exploring the theme of fear. Schatz fears that he is going to die however he is basing his predication on misinformation (Celsius versus Fahrenheit). However his father does not really have the ability to allay Schatz’s fears and to make matters worse Schatz isolates himself from the world around him. Spending the following days crying. Which may be important as by having Schatz cry Hemingway may be further highlighting Schatz’s fears when it comes to dying. The fact that the father is also lying down at the start of the story may be important as Hemingway could be using this as a symbolic representation for paralysis or not moving. Throughout the story the father’s words are not as comforting as one would expect a father’s words to be when it comes to a sick child. Though in the interest of clarity it might also be important to remember that Schatz’s has himself at death’s door. It may not be possible for anybody to alleviate Schatz’s fears. However despite believing that he is going to die Schatz shows a lot of courage and bravery and tries to accept the position he finds himself in.

The one thing that the father can do for Schatz is to tell him that he only has a flu. However he never fully explains this to Schatz and it is possible that Schatz’s imagination is running wild. Which is causing confusion. Schatz really believes that he is going to die because his temperature is so high. He also appears to have prepared himself by asking his father does he want to leave the room. This shows tremendous courage as Schatz is thinking of somebody else and how his death may affect them. He doesn’t want to see his father upset. However this point is not understood by his father. If anything throughout the story neither father or son appear to be listening to one another. Something that is noticeable when the father uses miles and kilometres to describe the differences between Celsius and Fahrenheit. The point is lost on Schatz and the father does not try and simplify further the point he is attempting to make. Though he is trying to alleviate Schatz’s concerns it doesn’t seem to be working.

It may also be a case that Hemingway is exploring the theme of control. Schatz does everything that is asked of him by his father when the reality may be that he might want to be left alone and face death as he thinks one should face death (alone). At no stage in the story does Schatz try and move from his bed and it is as though he is being controlled by the flu. His body may be unable to move. It is also possible that the father is trying to connect with Schatz however Schatz is trying to put a barrier between himself and his father. Something that is easier to understand should the reader remember that Schatz truly believes he is going to die. There is an element of not only heroism but stoicism when it comes to Schatz’s character. Again he firmly believes that he is going to die and is basing this understanding on incorrect information.

What is also interesting about the story is the fact that the father is able to leave the house and shoot quail. This may be important as it suggests that the father may be out of touch with how Schatz is feeling. However it might also be important to remember that the father is aware that Schatz only has a high temperature and the flu. His illness is yet to hit crisis point. Nonetheless some critics may suggest that the father throughout the story has not really been there for Schatz. Schatz after all is only nine years old and has no real understanding of what is really happening him. There is also so much more that the father could have done. Firstly he could have stayed with Schatz for the day rather than going shooting and secondly he could have realised that Schatz is only nine years old and may need a simpler explanation rather than the miles versus kilometres explanation that he gave Schatz. The mention of the line ‘we were still in bed’ may also be significant as it suggests the possibility that Schatz’s mother was in the bed when Schatz walked into the bedroom. At no stage of the story is there a motherly figure caring for Schatz. Yet the reader is left to assume there is a woman in the house. The onus or responsibility for Schatz’s care has fallen on his father who could have handled things a little bit better.
